FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

ECHO AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM SET FOR SECOND YEAR

Orrville, OH — The afterschool program, ECHO (East Chippewa Helping Out), is set to begin it’s second year on Monday August 22 at the East Chippewa Church of the Brethren located east of Smithville and north of Orrville. The ECHO After School Program is an effort to help working parents and assist children with school homework and other meaningful activities. The ECHO afterschool program will follow the GreenLocalSchool Districtcalendar and will serve students from Kindergarten through 6th grade. The program is open to students in the Green Local and OrrvilleCitySchoolsdistricts.

“I am very excited about the second year of the ECHO program,” stated Jodi Conrow, Director of the ECHO program as well as one of the teachers. “We took what we learned from our first year and made few changes for this year. Typically the students will get off the bus, have a snack, work on homework if they need or just have a little quiet reading time and then participate in some fun activities each day. We have designated art, music, Christian Living, and game days as well as some Suprise Adventure and Free Choice days! We also have a daily reading incentive program where students select a book of their choice to read from each day for 10-15 minutes and earn points they can ‘trade in’ for prizes at the end of the week.”

The ECHO program operating hours will be from 2:40 PM – 6:00 PM. There is a $20 registration fee per student and the cost is $30 a week per child. Registration packets are available in the church office Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM.
“We have a safe, structured environment for all students,” explained Conrow. “We assist the students with their homework to aleviate some of the stress homework time can place on a busy family. Both I and the teacher have experience in public schools and teaching. I was a math tutor and small group instructor for nine years and have a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education as well as a master’s degree in Literacy. The other teacher has worked with students with learning disabilities in public schools as a paraprofessional.”

“Our daily schedule provides time for homework at the program so that we can assist the students if they are struggling or just to allow the homework to be done before the parents pickup the students. Families are very busy in the evenings and we want to take some of the ‘load’ off when they get off work and still have to make dinner, go to sports/extra curricular activities and take care of their own list of chores to be done. We in no way want to replace the parents. Instead we want to be partners with the parents to allow them to maximize the time we have with the students and the time they will have with them each evening.”

Conrow has a BA in Elementary Education and a Master’s Degree in Literacy and has taught in the public schools for nine years. Her aide will be Dawn Ault.

The ECHO program will primarily serve Green Local & Orrville students due to transportation. “Students will be brought to the church by school bus after school and parents will have to pick them up by 6:00 PM,” offered Conrow.

“We are a smaller program with a maximum number of students of 36 with 2 teachers, so we feel we can give the students more individual attention each day,” said Conrow.”Last year we saw our students become more confident in themselves and their academics as the year progressed. We had a student who had experienced some difficulties with behavior and academics previously whose parents were happily surprised at the improvements he made last year. They felt it was in part to his participation in our program.that was the highlight of my year. I feel if I can make a difference to even one student, I have been successful!”

“This is an outreach by the church into the community to fill a need they saw with both parents having to work and/or single parent homes where no one is there when the students come home,” commented Conrow.

“Our mission statement is, ‘To provide an adult supervised learning environment that is safe, secure and developmentally appropriate for children. To illustrate the belief of Christ as a living Savior by upholding the teachings of the New Testament’.”

Registration packets are available in the church office Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM. Registration packets can be mailed to people if they request that as well. A student is not registered until parents have met with a staff member and their paperwork has been returned as well as the registration fee paid.
